Do pro shops clean bowling balls? ›

Many pro shops have machines that are especially designed for bowling balls called Rejuvenator or Reviver. These machines use rollers to rotate the bowling ball at a set temperature for a specific period of time and literally bake the oil out of the ball.

The right ball weight means personal comfort and control. While the 10% of your body weight rule is a good start, focus on how the ball feels in your hands. The ideal weight should allow you to bowl comfortably and consistently without straining your arm or shoulder.

Besides ball weight, another important criteria to selecting a ball at the alley is the size of the finger holes. Each bowling ball has holes for the thumb, middle finger and ring finger. Pick a ball with holes that allow your fingers to be inserted and removed freely, but not so freely that you can't grip the ball.

Some experts recommend against using harsh chemical cleaners like Windex, but regardless of what you use, you do not want to let the cleaner soak into the ball for too long. It's also important not to get liquid inside the ball, so tape up the holes if needed using waterproof tape.

Although it's an effective disinfectant, it can get in the pores of your ball and dry it out prematurely. (If your ball is made of urethane or plastic, rubbing alcohol won't hurt it.) Use a bowling ball life extender: Before and after your competition, use a bowling ball life extender like So Fresh & So Clean.

Drilling new holes in a bowling ball is usually handled by a professional, and in most cases, that's probably the best approach. However, it is possible to do it yourself!

In general, the rule of thumb for choosing a weight for your bowling ball is to go with one that is about 10% of your body weight. Since the highest weight is usually 16 pounds, any person that weighs over 160 pounds should look towards a 16-pound ball.

The arrows, about 15 feet (4.6 m) out on the lanes, are the preferred visual targets for most bowlers. Some bowlers may choose a point between two arrows. In either case, the visual point is closer to the foul line than to the pins. The pins are not the primary visual target.

Keep your wrist straight and hold your hand straight when you swing the ball out and back. For a hook shot, rotate slightly to the opposite side, but do not exaggerate this movement. Also, never look at the pins or your hand, but keep your eyes on the arrows in the lane. This will help you keep the correct form.

The first step and absolute key to getting strikes is hitting the “strike pocket”. The strike pocket is between the 1 and 2 pins for left-handers and between the 1 and 3 pins for right-handers. Hitting the pocket consistently with the right amount of speed and hook will lead to repeating strikes and much higher scores.

While cleaning is important, it doesn't count as resurfacing. Unfortunately, there's no magic number for how often you should have your bowling ball resurfaced. Some say you should do it yourself or have it done professionally every 60 games, others say you could go as many as 250 matches.

Oils used in modern bowling are thick and used in great quantities. As a result, bowling balls, especially shiny ones, can become slimy and lose performance if they are not wiped between shots. Typically, Professional bowlers use a shammy to wipe the bowling ball and a towel to wipe their hands.

Get the most out of its performance: Cleaning the dirt and oil off of your ball regularly will help keep the coverstock fresh and have your ball performing at its best. It's important to wipe down your ball in between every shot to minimize the amount of oil that soaks into your ball's cover.

Wipe after Each Shot: Use a shammy to wipe off any oil or dirt after each shot. This prevents contaminants from penetrating the ball's surface. Deep Cleaning: Periodically, you should perform a deep clean using a dedicated bowling ball cleaner. This removes deep-seated oil and grime from the ball's pores.
