With distinct sword-based abilities that shuffle between different playstyles, the Swordmaster is an ideal choice for players looking for balanced gameplay, as the character's abilities strike a fine balance between defensive and offensive abilities. Switching between the two main abilities can be a little confusing at first, but timing it right is the key to success.

Swordmaster's Abilities

While many of the basic attacks and abilities in the game can be universal to all characters, certain abilities set each type aside from one another.

The Swordmaster is a balanced character that uses two active and five passive abilities to fight enemies. Most of the passive abilities rely on how you use the active ones, so mastering the two can be essential for victory.

Active Abilities

Description

Psionic Blades (Q)

Summons up to four swords that can track and attack enemies.

Whirling Blade (E)

Summons a sword that hovers around for 8 seconds.

Passive Abilities

Description

Healing Scabbard

Restores 30 Life when dealing with unblocked damage.

Flurry of Blades

After firing Psionic Blades, skill cooldown is reduced to 10–15 seconds.

Deflection

When Whirling Blade is active, damage taken is reduced by 50%.

Momentum

Psionic Blades increase Critical Strike Chance by 50% for 5 seconds.

Crippling Strike

If Psionic Blades manage to critically hit an enemy, their movement speed is reduced by 60 for 5 seconds.

The Psionic Blades are going to be your character's most used ability, as it creates up to four swords that act as your allies. To use this, simply press Q and aim at the enemy in front of you.

Using the Whirling Blade creates anoffensive and defensive area of effect for your character. This is highly useful when engaging enemies in both PvE and PvP scenarios. The trick lies in its timing. It's best to trigger this ability (by pressing E) before getting into a fight.

Instead of blocking, using Whirling Blade as your shield can be effective if you're not sure of your surroundings.

When learning how to time a Swordmaster's abilities, it can be easy to forget one's physical limitations. For this reason, a Flask of Shielding and the Whirling Blade ability become essential tools to protect oneself.

A ranged weapon like a Crossbow can counter a Swordmaster's Psionic Blades. Avoiding these attacks would be useful to keep in mind.

Throughout your playthrough, there are three key aspects to focus on:

1. Using Psionic Blades for ranged attacks: Remember that your inventory swords are limited, so be careful about when you use your blades as ranged attacks. These are best fired when the enemy is at a distance, and you wish to close the gap.

2. Using Whirling Blade to get out of dicey situations: When hordes of enemies try to kill you, quickly using Whirling Blade ensures that you have a form of defense around you for a few seconds. So, use this for defensive purposes.

3. Using heavy attacks: Simply hold your attack button (left-click) until the circle fills up. This unleashes a heavy attack, but also requires precise timing. It's recommended that you keep moving your character around to stay safer as the attack charges up.

Make sure you stack swords in your inventory, otherwise the abilities won't work.

Before stepping into a game, it's recommended that you purchase the necessary items from the Merchant in the lobby. For the Swordmaster, it's important to keep enough Healing Potions and a Flask of Shielding handy.

If you're new to the game, keep in mind that Dungeonborne is best played with a co-op partner. Otherwise, handling yourself solo will require twice the gear and equipment, which can be difficult.

To increase your chances of survival, double-handling a long sword can help improve your attack power. Since all your equipment is lost if you lose a game, chances are that you'll look for a new weapon occasionally.

Long swords are generally simpler to find in a dungeon and, even though a bit slow, are trustworthy weapons you can carry with you. Unfortunately, they do not stack as short swords you could otherwise use for your main abilities.

Conclusively, the most ideal way to use weapons as a Swordmaster would be to collect short swords while attacking with bigger ones. This helps you keep enough swords to use for Psionic Blades and Whirling Blade abilities, while also being primarily used for attacking enemies.
